Virgin hair has had no chemical treatment of any kind and comes from one donor. Remy human hair keeps every cuticle facing the same direction, root to tip, but it may have been dyed, bleached or steamed. Virgin describes chemical history. Remy describes how the hair was collected and kept in order. A bundle can be both, either, or neither.
You open two listings on the same day. One reads 100% virgin hair, $70 a bundle. The other reads Remy human hair, $38. Both use the same glossy photo of the same glossy ponytail. Neither page explains the difference, and the seller answers your DM with a fire emoji.
No regulator polices either word, so sellers stretch both. Once you know what each¸ one promises, you can read a listing in about fifteen seconds and tell whether the price makes sense.
What is virgin hair?
Virgin hair is human hair that has taken no chemical treatment. No dye, no bleach, no perm, no relaxer, no acid bath. It comes from a single donor, which is why the texture holds steady from the top of the bundle to the ends.
Three things follow from that definition:
- The cuticle layer stays whole. Cuticles are the overlapping scales on the outside of each strand. They hold moisture in and give hair its shine. Strip them and hair goes dull and porous within weeks.
- The color is the donor’s own. Most virgin hair arrives in natural black through dark brown. A platinum 613 blonde bundle cannot be virgin, because someone bleached it to get there. That does not make it bad hair. It makes it processed hair, and it should carry a different price and a different care routine.
- The texture is the donor’s own too. Some suppliers steam virgin hair to set a wave. Steam uses no chemicals, so many factories still sell it as virgin. Others hold that any texture change ends the claim. Ask which one you are buying.
What is Remy human hair?
Remy human hair is hair collected so that all strands point the same way. A collector ties the ponytail before cutting it and keeps that alignment through every stage of manufacturing, from washing to wefting.
That is the whole promise. Remy says nothing about dye, bleach or heat. Dyed Remy hair is still Remy.
Remy hair meaning: where the term comes from
“Remy” (you will also see Remi) belongs to the hair trade rather than to chemistry. It marks one production decision: keeping root ends and tip ends separated.
The reason it matters comes down to friction. Cuticle scales lie in one direction, like roof shingles. When all the strands in a bundle run the same way, the scales slide past each other. Reverse half of them and the scales catch, lock together and mat. A matted bundle cannot be rescued with conditioner.
Non-Remy hair, and why the cheapest bundles mat
Non-Remy hair comes from mixed sources: salon floor sweepings, brush collections, several donors combined. Root ends and tip ends land in the same batch facing opposite ways.
Factories solve this with acid. An acid bath dissolves the cuticle so the scales can no longer catch, then a silicone coating puts the shine back. Out of the bag, that hair looks like the photo. After three to five washes the silicone rinses away, and what you have left is porous hair with no cuticle, which dries out and tangles at the nape within a month.
Sellers rarely print “non-Remy” on the label. They print 100% human hair, which is true, and leave out the rest.
Virgin hair vs Remy hair: the comparison
| Virgin hair | Remy hair | Non-Remy hair | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chemical processing | None | Permitted | Acid bath in most cases |
| Cuticle intact | Yes | Yes | Stripped, then coated |
| Cuticle direction | Aligned | Aligned | Mixed |
| Donors per bundle | One | One or several | Many |
| Color available | Donor’s natural shade | Any color | Any color |
| Takes bleach well | Yes | Depends on prior processing | No |
| Lifespan with care | Longest | Shorter than virgin | Shortest |
| Price per 100g | Highest | Middle | Lowest |
Read the table in one line: virgin is a claim about what has been done to the hair, Remy is a claim about how it was gathered. Good bundles carry both. Marketing copy that stacks them into “virgin Remy” adds a word, not a quality.
Where raw hair fits
Raw hair sits one step above virgin in most suppliers’ language. Three conditions apply at once: one donor, no chemical processing, and no steam processing to change the texture. The wave you see grew that way on someone’s head.
That extra condition is the whole gap between raw and virgin, and it is the reason raw bundles from the same factory cost more.
The term carries no legal weight. Any seller can print raw on a bag, which is how the word lost its meaning across the industry. Our story covers why we built a factory instead of buying inventory from one.
Four checks you can run yourself
1. Feel the strand in both directions. Pinch a few strands and slide your fingers from root to tip, then back up. Smooth going down, with a faint grip coming up, means the cuticle is there and aligned. Identical in both directions means someone stripped it.
2. Wash the coating out before you judge anything. Shampoo twice, skip the conditioner, air dry. Silicone-coated hair turns dry and grabby the moment the coating leaves. Cuticle-intact hair stays soft.
3. Look at the color in daylight. Virgin hair varies in tone across a bundle, because one head of hair varies in tone. A bundle with no variation at all has taken dye.
4. Ask two questions before you pay. Where was the hair collected, and did the bundle come from one donor? A supplier who owns its production answers both without hedging. A reseller changes the subject.
Skip the bleach-a-strand test that circulates on TikTok. Bleaching voids most supplier warranties, including ours, and you will have spent $80 to learn something the first three checks already told you.
What virgin and Remy hair should cost
Price sorts the categories faster than any label. A 100g bundle of genuine single-donor raw or virgin hair starts around $70 to $90 for shorter lengths and climbs with length, because long donor ponytails are scarce.
Our own raw bundles run $80 to $179 per 100g depending on length, with lengths from 12 to 34 inches. HD Swiss closures run $100 to $175, and 13×6 frontals $205 to $265.
A $25 bundle advertised as virgin is non-Remy hair with a coating on it. The math leaves no room for anything else once you account for collection, washing, wefting and shipping.
For a full install, plan on:
- 2 bundles for 10 to 14 inches, or for adding light volume
- 3 bundles for a full sew-in at 16 to 22 inches, which covers most clients
- 4 bundles for 24 inches and up, or for a fuller look
Frequently asked questions
Does virgin hair last longer than Remy hair? In most cases, yes. Virgin hair has taken no chemical damage, so the cuticle starts at full strength. Dyed or permed Remy hair starts with some of that strength spent. Both outlast non-Remy hair by a wide margin.
Can you bleach virgin hair to 613 blonde? Yes, and virgin hair handles it better than processed hair, because the cuticle has not been opened before. Book a colorist for the first lift rather than doing it at home. Check your warranty first, since coloring voids most of them.
Is Remy hair worth buying? For colored looks, Remy hair often makes more sense than virgin. You want 613 blonde or a copper melt, someone has to lift the hair, and paying a virgin premium for hair that gets bleached anyway wastes money. For natural colors you plan to keep for a year or more, virgin or raw earns its price back.
Can non-Remy hair be fixed once it mats? No. Matting happens when cuticle scales interlock, and no product reverses that. Cutting out the matted section is the only option, which is why the cheap bundle costs more over a year than the expensive one.
How do I keep raw hair soft? Wash it every one to two weeks with sulfate-free shampoo, condition from mid-length down, and air dry when you can. Keep heat tools under 400°F and use a heat protectant. Hair worn for sew-ins needs the same care as the hair growing under it.
Choosing with the label in mind
The labels are worth learning because they do carry real information, once you know which question each one answers. Virgin tells you what has been done to the hair. Remy tells you how it was collected. Raw tells you both, plus that nobody touched the texture.
Anything else on the bag is decoration.
Our bundles ship from warehouses in Vancouver, BC and Marysville, WA, so North American orders clear without customs delays. Browse the collection, or message us on WhatsApp if you want a stylist to walk you through lengths before you order.
